August 4. Along the Hudson.

Lady's Thumb.

I made this drawing on Sunday while sitting in the grass by the Hudson. There were a few families on picnics nearby, some soccer players kicking a ball between them, a couple of people swinging in hammocks strung between trees, and three men fishing by the shore.

"The fish aren't biting today," the fishermen said to each other.

"They never bite after a rain."

"You won't catch anything after a rain. Not ever."

"No point fishing after that rain yesterday."

They propped their rods in tree crooks or in the rocks, watched the still and straight fishing lines in the water, and talked now and then about baseball and about fish that don't bite after the rain.

The leaves of the Lady's Thumb are a mild-tasting edible.

Unfortunately the only thing I could think about reading this was--rain. You had rain? Lucky you and lucky fish.

I used to love going swimming after it rained because the water was warm then.

Mapelba, it was a perfect rainy day on Saturday - the kind of day that gets dark in the middle of the afternoon and you feel the change in the air's energy before the storm bursts. It's a timeless feeling - is is early morning, afternoon, night? Great day.
